Original Story
 • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Tuesday, March 28, 2006

Buffalo, New York —The proposed Elmwood Village Hotel got the final approval it needed from the city of Buffalo’s Planning Board this morning.

In a unanimous vote, the Board approved most of the design and site plan of the hotel.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a proposed hotel by Savarino Construction Services Corporation and is designed by architect Karl Frizlen of the Frizlen Group. It is to be placed on the corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo and will require the demolition of at least five properties (1109-1121 Elmwood).

Despite the fact that today’s meeting was not a “public hearing”, several citizens lashed out at the Board after the approval.

“Thanks for destroying Buffalo,” said one man.

“[I am] disgusted. Because they did not allow the community to speak, it is the bastardization of the concepts of justice and democracy, and that’s what happened [today],” said Clarence Carnahan, a local business owner and concerned citizen, to Wikinews. He also referred to some board members as “immoral pigs.”

“[I feel] frustration because no one could speak. I was going to address the displacement of all the shops that are there and that they should be grand-fathered into the new space. We did not get to say that. [I am disappointed] that they are endorsing this enormous monstrosity.” said Nancy Pollina, co-owner of Don Apparel with Patty Morris at 1119 Elmwood.

Although the Board approved the hotel proposal, Savarino Construction must still go before the board to approve things such as signage and lighting. The Planning Board meets again on April 11, 2006 at 8:00a.m., but it is unknown if the hotel proposal will be on the agenda.

Pano Georgiadis, owner of Pano’s Restaurant at 1081 Elmwood and owner of 605 Forest Avenue in Buffalo, threatened to sue Savarino Construction at a public meeting on March 15, 2006 saying, “if you try to get a variance to change the code, I will sue you. This is my home, number one. If you go against city code, and you try to do the most rooms with a minimal amount of parking, again, I will sue you.”

Today, Georgiadis confirmed to Wikinews that he is “definitely” suing, but that his “situation is different” as compared to others looking into legal action. “This is my property. They did it [changed the code] without my approval.”

Last week, the Common Council voted and approved the rezoning of all five properties including 605 Forest.

Some are also considering taking the case to the New York State Supreme Court to “seek an injunction”and would go “pro se, meaning I am going to present the case myself,” said Carnahan.

Despite the approvals by the Common Council and Planning Board, organizers schedulaed another protest for Saturday April 1, 2006 at 2:00p.m. on the proposed site at Forest and Elmwood.

“We are not going to go down without a fight. We are going to go kicking and screaming,” said Pollina.

New mall in Washington, US almost complete, traffic a concern

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

A new shopping center in Washington, United States called Lakewood Crossing is planning on building and opening new stores. It was opened on September 21, 2006 with the opening of the Marysville, Washington Costco. The mall has still been in the planning stages since 2005. The developer is Powell Development from Kirkland, Washington and the mall is located in North Lakewood, Washington.

There are more than 17 stores and more are being built. A Marshalls, Boston’s Gourmet Pizza, Mongolian Grill, Discount Tire, and others are yet to open. The Washington State Department of Transportation say this could cause more traffic problems. The intersection of Washington State Route 531 and 27th Avenue (only way in and out) is “crowded and tight”. Twin Lakes is now inaccessible because of the traffic.

Plans to redo the traffic are coming soon. They plan to open a loop ramp on the interchange of Washington State Route 531 and Interstate 5 in 2009. Twin Lakes Avenue NE will be extended and a freeway ramp will be added soon, along with a bridge across Interstate 5.

Finding The Right Senior Healthcare Products

Finding the Right Senior Healthcare Products

by

Smith C. John

Age is something that happens to each and every one of us, and as time goes on you will also find that your body starts to change in a variety of ways. As you get older you may find it more and more difficult to move your body and perform various activities the way you used to in the past. One common problem with seniors involves arthritis, which is when bones start to weaken and lose their density. With all of the age related problems that can develop, there are a number of modifications you may wish to make to your life style and also to the interior of your home, so as to make life easier for you.

For example, it is quite common ion homes where seniors live to have railings installed in the bathrooms or entrances of the home, and other fixtures that make it easy for those in wheelchairs or having difficulty walking to get in and out of different parts of the home. You may not really know what type of age related health care products you might be needing, and if this is the case you should definitely take the time to do a bit more online research about the issue. There is a good chance that you will eventually need to make some changes to your home, and finding the right company where you can buy all of the products that you may be needing and have them installed is therefore going to be more important as time goes on.

If you spend some time doing online research you will soon find that there are a wide variety of companies out there that seem to deal exclusively with the needs of senior citizens and the elderly or disabled. If you spend a bit of time looking through the catalogs of these companies it will not be long before you find some items or products that you will know with absolute certainty would be able to make your life a bit easier if you chose to buy them. You may be able to find everything ranging from fortified vitamin tablets to guard railings for the bathroom of your home. Depending on your specific needs, you may need only a few of these products or a lot of them.

However, if you know for sure that you could use some of these products you will want to take the time to find a company offering them at a decent price. With all of the expenses that you might already have to worry about it would be quite disturbing to have to spend a ton more money on senior citizen products. The good news is that with enough time spent searching you will likely be able to find a store for the elderly that offers all of the products you may be needing at a decent price. That way you would not have to worry about going broke in the process of trying to find the best products for senior citizens.

Students promote Thailand’s tourism with their paintbrushes – and give proceeds to charity

Saturday, September 8, 2007

An innovative “Children helping Children” project has been launched by local volunteers and students of a school in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. Named the Chiang Mai Charity Calendar 2008 it serves the dual purpose of promoting their 700-year-old city, and supporting disadvantaged children.

Self-financed with no advertising, and produced by schoolchildren for a charitable cause, it is probably the first of its kind to surface in the travel industry, and something normally only in the domain of National Tourism Organizations.

The objectives are:

 1. Initially, to encourage well-off children to help poor kids in a ‘create and donate’ concept, using art pieces instead of money.
 2. To put Chiang Mai on the world map as a prime destination in its own right for leisure, conferences, medical tourism, high quality purchases, sports, education, studies, and not a stopover, as many perceive it to be.
 3. To raise funds for disadvantaged Thai children through sales of the calendar.
 4. To further motivate the kids who donated the paintings to continue doing worthwhile things – by letting them experience their own success, first hand.’

The students, all from Prem Tinsulononda International School, were invited to create original paintings depicting why “Chiang Mai is a Wonderful Place to Live”. This resulted in 93 entries from all ages and nationalities, thirteen of which were selected for inclusion in the not-for-profit 40-page 14-month full colour desk calendar. The production contains around 2000 words of original text, highlighting the city’s rich history, and relative inaccessibility for centuries, e.g.:

“The railway line did not reach the city until 1921, and the last stretch of paved road was not completed until 1972 … extraordinary to think that in the previous year the Apollo 15 crew had already driven vehicles on the moon”

It points out that in 2005, Travel+Leisure readers voted Chiang Mai into fifth place in the list of world’s best cities, acknowledges that the Asian economic building boom has had a negative impact, but adds:

“High buildings, highways and hypermarkets bow deferentially to antiquity, and in many cases their clumsy presence only serves to intensify the beauty of the city’s historical monuments – ancient chedis or graceful spires gloriously upstaging trendy modern architecture”

This colourful and useful product will carry its promotional message into homes and offices all around the world, and has been welcomed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand Director Northern Office Region 1, Mr. Junnapong Saranak, who in his introductory message in the calendar, remarks that it is unique, and ‘may even become a collector’s item’

Israel-Palestine ceasefire begins with violence

Wednesday, February 9, 2005

Minor violent incidents and claims of Lebanese sabotage marked an unsteady start today for the Israeli-Palestinian truce, already threatened after militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad announced that they were not bound by the agreement.

Two Israeli motorists escaped uninjured in the West Bank today after coming under fire from Palestinian gunmen.

Elsewhere, Hamas militant Hassan Alami was found dead in the Khan Younis camp of Southern Gaza, killed while carrying out activities for the group. Although Hamas refused to be bound by the agreement signed yesterday in Sharm el-Sheik, it has promised to keep quiet at the request of Mahmoud Abbas.

Another Palestinian man is in a critical condition after being shot in the chest. The man, from the Rafah refugee camp, was shot near the Israeli settlement of Atzmona. The Israeli army, which has a garrison in Atzmona, is looking into the incident.

Meanwhile, Ramallah has accused Lebanese rebel group Hezbollah of attempting to sabotage the fragile peace agreement in the Middle East. The group, backed by Syria and Iran, are attempting to recruit Palestinian militants to engage in attacks of Israeli targets, claim Palestinian spokesmen. The charges mirror those made recently by Israel, which has long accused Hezbollah of bankrolling Palestinian violence in the region.

Hezbollah denies the charges, and claims to be honouring the ceasefire agreed yesterday. However, Palestinian officials claim to have intercepted bank records and email communications that prove that the guerilla group is recruiting militants in the West Bank. Abbas is shying away from any confrontation with the group at the moment, but has sent an envoy to Beirut to persuade Hezbollah to desist from its aggressive activities.

Despite the setbacks, Israel has begun to lift restrictions of travel and issue permits to 1000 Palestinians to work in Israel, as part of Tuesday’s deal. Sharon has agreed to travel to Ramallah to continue talks toward peace in the region.
