Wikinews interviews Sandra Jephcott, Sustainable Australia candidate for 2020 Groom by-election

Friday, November 27, 2020

Voters in the Australian electoral district of Groom are scheduled to go to the polls in a by-election this week following the resignation of Liberal National MP John McVeigh for family reasons.

Groom is located in the state of Queensland, and is centred around the city of Toowoomba. At the last federal election, the Liberal National Party, Queensland’s dominant conservative party, won this seat by over 70% of the two-party-preferred vote, and since the seat’s creation in 1984, it has been held by conservative political parties.

Some political analysts considered this a foregone conclusion, with analyst Kevin Bonham having declared it on his blog as “Australia’s most boring by-election”, however Bonham noted the size of the swing may have been indicative of the dominant centre left Labor Party’s general performance in Queensland. There was a 4.2% swing against the Labor Party in the state of Queensland at the previous federal election.

Wikinews spoke to one of the four candidates running in the by-election, Sandra Jephcott, who is running for the Sustainable Australia party. Sustainable Australia describes itself as a “independent community movement from the political centre”. According to the party’s website, Jephcott is a veterinarian and farmer, who has completed a veterinary degree from the University of Queensland, as well as a Master of Business Affairs at Bond University and a Master of Science at James Cook University. With Wikinews, Jephcott discussed climate change, COVID-19, water security, and foreign ownership.

History Of Automobiles 1828 1910

Submitted by: Lawrence Reaves

At the same time steam powered vehicles were being developed, other inventors were hard at work developing a horseless carriage run by means of electricity. A Hungarian by the name of Anyos Jedlik built a small model car powered by an electric motor as early as 1828. Similar efforts were produced in the United States in 1834, and the Netherlands in 1835. Scottish inventors made the first full sized electric carriage soon afterward. This led to the rise of electricity-based transport in the US and Europe, at a time when Steam locomotion was also becoming fashionable as a new alternative to old fashioned literal horse power.

Meanwhile, another avenue of research was pursued in the direction of internal combustion engines propelled by various gases. Samuel Brown of England built a vehicle driven by internal combustion engine running off hydrogen, which in 1826 was successfully propelled up a hill in London. The immense cost of the operation proved too prohibitive for immediate extended use, but it was a significant landmark portending things to come.

In 1860 in France, a similar vehicle travelled 9 kilometers from Paris to a nearby village in three hours. In 1870, an Austrian, Siegfried Marcus demonstrated the use of gasoline to propel a small vehicle in Vienna Austria. By 1888 he had built a car capable of carrying four passengers.

The 1870 model makes him technically the inventor of the modern gas-powered car, however this accomplishment was stricken from German accounts by the Nazis during World War Two on account of Marcus Jewish heritage. Instead, the credit was given to other German scientists who were attempting to do the same around the same time and were successful slightly later, in particular Karl Benz in 1885, and Gottlieb Daimler in 1889.

Another claim belongs to Enrico Bernardi of Italy, who had created a gasoline run tricycle in 1882. Benz began producing automobiles for commercial sales in both Germany and France the year 1888, thus inaugurating a new era in the history of human transport. Many others began experimenting with making both three and four wheeled vehicles running off gasoline around this time in the US and Europe. The French company Panhard began producing motor vehicles in 1889, followed by Peugeot in 1891, and in America, Duryea Motor Wagons in 1893. Britain meanwhile produced its very first four wheeled gasoline driven vehicle in 1895.

Both the US and France were ready for mass production by 1900, the year Henry Ford founded the Detroit Automobile Company. The Olds Motor Vehicles Company, begun in 1902, early on took the lead in car manufacturing, and was soon followed by several other competitors producing cars for American roads by the thousands: Winton Motor Carriages, Ford Motors, Cadillac, and the Thomas B. Jeffery Company. By the end of 1903, there were around 9000 gasoline cars in the US. Technological improvements to the design were constantly being carried out to the design throughout this time, as they still are today. Within a decade, the gasoline run engine had easily eclipsed its competition, the steam engine and the electric car, and become the predominant means of horseless locomotion, which it remains today, although it maybe said that worldwide fuel scarcities are currently prompting a second look at some of the alternatives.

Kenya government fires health worker strikers over failure to ‘report back to work’

Saturday, March 10, 2012

The Kenyan government has dismissed 25,000 striking health workers, mostly nurses, citing failure to heed government orders to recommence work and concern for the welfare of hospital patients. Speaking on behalf of the government, Alfred Mutua stated the workers were dismissed “illegally striking” and “[defying] the directive … to report back to work”, which he called “unethical”. The government asks that “[a]ll qualified health professionals, who are unemployed and/or retired have been advised to report to their nearest health facility for interviews and deployment”, Mutua stated.

The workers, who had been on strike for four days, were wishing to have improvements made to their wages, working conditions, and allowances. The strikes have caused a significant number of Kenyan hospitals to cease operations. According to Kenya Health Professionals Society spokesperson Alex Orina, the average monthly wage plus allowances for health workers in Kenya is KSh25,000 (£193, US$302 or €230) approximately. With an increasing number of reports of patients neglected in hospitals emerging, two trade unions met with the Kenyan government yesterday and negotitated a return to work, although a significant proportion of demonstrators defied the agreement, The Guardian reported.

Orina told Reuters the dismissals were “cat-and-mouse games, you cannot sack an entire workforce. It is a ploy to get us to rush back to work, but our strike continues until our demands are met”. Frederick Omiah, a member of the same society, believed the government’s actions would “make an already delicate and volatile situation worse”, expressing concern that demonstrations may continue in the capital Nairobi, amongst other locations. Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union chairperson Dr. Victor Ng’ani described government actions as “reckless”.

Mutua said the health workers were “no longer employees of the government” and had been eliminated from the payroll. While Ng’ani told the BBC of difficulties with finding other workers as skilled and experienced, Mutua reportedly stated that this would not be an issue. “We have over 100,000 to 200,000 health professionals looking for work today,” Mutua commented. “There will be a lag of a day or two … but it is better than letting people die on the floor, at the gate, or suffer in pain”.

Wikinews interviews Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine

Friday, April 11, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine. The magazine, which is free to read online, was started as a resource for the low budget moviemaker and features book, independent film, equipment and software reviews as well as articles on film distribution, special effects and lighting.

He says that one of the goals of the magazine is to “connect low-budget filmmakers via a feeling of community, as many…..often compete so viciously against one another in film festivals for coveted “shots” with Hollywood, that they can quickly forget their similarities.”

When asked if films made on a shoestring budget can really compete with those made for millions of dollars, he replied, “no…yes…and absolutely. Allow me to explain.” And so he does in the interview below.

The 10 Most Trendy Seafood Restaurants In The United States

By Christa Kowalczyk

United States is one of the havens of the best seafood restaurants in the globe.

Hook Restaurant is a well-maintained seafood restaurant in Washington D.C. operated by Chef Barton Seaver, who co-owns this place. The grilled calamari and the bluefish are the two most favorite items on the Hook’s menu. The calamari is cooked over a wooden grill and dished up with basil walnut pesto and warm potato salad. Most of the diners like to have it sliced, fried, and served with marinara sauce but the calamari is usually left in one or two pieces while it’s grilled. The bluefish is cooked on a level grill and dished up with grilled lemon together with the same pesto with the calamari and a potato parsnip cake. The bluefish has a great flavor but it rots very quickly and this is the reason why many chefs and home cooks are cautious of using it but it has become one of the top dishes on the Hook’s Restaurant menu and many of their regular diners have really taken a liking to this fish.

This restaurant is specifically a sustainable seafood restaurant. It creates a remarkable dining experience but it’s a restaurant with a conscience because the owners believe that they are also responsible for ocean conservation.

Restaurant Nora in Washington D.C is also one of the prominent seafood restaurants in the United States and it is the first restaurant to receive the organic certification, which means that the 95% of the ingredients used in this restaurant must come from expert organic farmers, growers, and suppliers. Nora Pouillon is the owner of this 23-year-old restaurant and the founding member of the Seafood Choices Alliance, an international association for sustainable seafood. It makes the seafood market environmentally and economically sustainable both on the fishermen and fish farmers to the wholesalers, retailers and restaurants. Menu on Restaurant Nora varies daily and features fresh, in season seafood among its organic selection. Lobster and salmon is one of the favorite seafood that this restaurant prepared because of its versatility, you can prepare this food in many different ways.

The Lundy Brothers Restaurant was serving seafood at the biggest restaurant in the United States with a seating capacity of 2400 persons but now its seating capacity was reduced to 700 people. The New York Preservation Commission chose this restaurant as a landmark in 1992. It was located at the heart of Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn. They offered a wide variety of seafood that is simple and well prepared.

Fore Street is a contemporary restaurant in Portland, Maine. At Fore Street menu, they concentrate on the best raw materials from community Maine farmers, fishermen, foragers and cheese makers. Their menu changes everyday based on the availability of the materials they need in their restaurants but one of the few items on their menu list that has become the signature dish of their restaurant is the wood oven roasted mussels and this is the most requested recipe.

The Newport Bay Restaurant is one of the most well known seafood restaurants in the Pacific Northwest, New Port Bay. This is a relaxing place where you can enjoy the ocean’s bounty. The clamed chowder, flame-broiled Alaskan salmon and classic Halibut fish and chips are always the crowd pleasers and always on the top of the list of their diner’s menu. Truly, in the United States there are a lot of seafood restaurants that offers good food and an astounding ambience.
