How to Take Clean Drinking Water

by

If you are like most Americans, you are aware that water supplies are not as dependable as we would like. Over 2100 contaminants have been discovered in drinking water thus far. Our water source may be free of some of these, but who knows which are still present?

Many reading this will have acted on these warnings and stopped drinking faucet or well water. For you only filtered water is worthy of your family or yourself. That means you are either purchasing bottled water, or that you have bought a water filter and are purifying it yourself.

The problem is, when you go on vacation or on a camping trip, you don’t want to trust the water supplies available to have the same healthy water you enjoy at home. If you are purchasing bottled water, then you’ll take along a case or two. This option will probably provide you with safe water, but it is the most expensive. Over eight billion gallons of filtered water are sold annually at prices at times exceeding gasoline. Bottled water may not be as pure is the label indicates but it would be fine for camping. However, keep in mind that if you discard the plastic bottles you use on your vacation, you only add to the environmental problem of plastics that could sit in land fills for centuries.

Perhaps you have purchased a gravity feed water filter. If so, you will save money over bottled water and will not have multiple bottles to discard or recycle. If the unit is portable, take it with you on vacation so that you can guarantee the water you drink away is as good as that you drink at home.

What if you either have a built in filter, or don’t have room to take your gravity fed water filter with you? In that case, a little planning ahead would still provide the same water you drink at home. You filter extra water and store it to take with you.

But in what should you store and transport it? The water is clean but you certainly don’t want to jeopardize your family’s health by storing it in unsafe containers. Perhaps you have heard the recent plastics warnings. The PET bottles (made of polyethylene terephthalate) used by most bottled water companies, are safe enough as long as they are not reused. However, if you store water in them where it is warm, plastics can contaminate the water over time.

What about the hard plastic bottles for sports drinks or water coolers? The National Institutes of Health recently showed that bisphenol, used to make these bottles, may cause neurological problems in developing babies. They have yet to discover the long range effects on adults. That may be a bit risky to store and transport water in those containers too.

Few choices remain. You want the purified water from home but cant bring the filter. If you take filtered water from home and store it in unsafe containers, you defeat your purpose. The solution to this dilemma is to filter extra water at home and store it in glass containers. This would include bottles, jars, and glass lined thermoses.

This choice solves several problems. We will have the clean water we want without the problem of discarded bottles. Further we have the peace of mind that the bottle will not contaminate the water. The bottles can be washed and reused without danger to you or your family.

Are you unsure of the water quality where you go camping? If so, you could solve that problem with a portable water filter.

46 illegal Afghan immigrants suffocate in truck in Pakistan

Tuesday, April 7, 2009

Correction — Nov 1, 2013 The article below claims each passenger paid 4000 to 8000 USD. Each paid 30,000 Rupees, equivilent at the time to about US$375.

The bodies of 46 Afghan illegal immigrants who suffocated to death in a container truck Saturday near Quetta, Pakistan, returned home Tuesday.

The Edhi Foundation placed the victim’s bodies into coffins to transport them back to Chaman. Funeral prayers were said before victims left Quetta hospital. “We are taking these dead bodies to Spin Boldak and later these will be flown to Kabul by helicopter. We are thankful to Pakistan government for every help,” said Afghan consul general Daud Mohsini.

Afghan officials received the bodies from The Edhi ambulances and Pakistan police escorts at the Pak-Afghan border Bab-e-Dosti (Friendship Gate). Security was high and traffic was backed up at the border crossing. The bodies were taken to Kandahar then to Kabul before they were laid to rest in their home towns.

Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan dispatched aircraft to Pakistan to bring home the 46 victims. Poor weather grounded the planes, and the bodies were driven back across the border.

Pakistan police found a locked truck packed with approximately 111 Afghan illegal immigrants around 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Quetta on Saturday. The driver had fled the scene where 62 people were initially pronounced dead. Police said that from the strong smell emanating from the truck, the victims may have died days before they were discovered.

45 other people were found unconscious and taken directly to the hospital. At hospital two more migrants died. “The death toll is 46,” said Ghulam Dastagir, a police official.

Wazir Khan Nasir, a senior police official said, “We have been able to talk to some of the people, who were trapped in the container. They were all Afghans in the container and the container was going to Iran, When the condition of people inside the container deteriorated, the driver fled, leaving the container.”

Survivors have reported that a human smuggling racket locked 64 Kabul residents and 37 Spin Boldak residents in the truck container Friday afternoon. The truck’s air conditioning unit stopped working causing the locked passengers to cry out for help which was unheeded by the truck’s driver, and they fell unconscious. However, the loud ruckus caused by the trapped people inside did alert police and local residents to their plight.

The trip had cost each illegal immigrant US$4,000 to 8,000 for the trip. Gul Zameen, a survivor said, “We are all poor and wanted to find jobs in Quetta and Iran.”

The survivors have been charged under the Foreigners Act and some have been detained. Karzai has ordered an investigation and “demanded people avoid dangerous illegal migration and not be deceived by smugglers.” “We’ll go to Pakistan and talk to the survivors to find out what had exactly happened. The culprits will be brought to justice,” said Moheeddin Baluch head of the investigating delegation.

Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is also investigating. Five suspects believed to be involved in running the human smuggling racket have been arrested.

Canadian House of Commons approves same-sex marriage

Tuesday, June 28, 2005

In a 158 to 133 vote of the House of Commons held Tuesday night, Canadian MPs have approved the legalization of same-sex weddings in Canada. Assuming the Senate passes Bill C-38 and the Governor General gives royal assent, Canada will become the fourth country in the world to legalize same-sex weddings after the Netherlands, Belgium, and Spain. The bill presented to the House of Commons by the Liberal government of Prime Minister Paul Martin has passed mainly because of support by the left-wing New Democratic Party of Jack Layton and the support of the separatist Bloc Québécois, which enabled it to overcome the staunch opposition of the Conservative Party.

Votes in House of Commons on Bill C-38
Group For Against Absentees Total
Liberal cabinet 36 0 1 37
Liberal backbench 59 32 3 95
Conservatives 3 93 2 98
Bloc Québécois 43 5 6 54
NDP 17 1 1 19
Independents 0 2 2 4
Totals 158 133 16 307

While this vote is historic, gay weddings had already been legalized by the Supreme Courts of most Canadian provinces. The C-38 bill now extends these rulings to the rest of Canada, namely to the provinces of Alberta, Prince Edward Island, and the territory of Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.

The adoption of this bill ends a longstanding political and judicial debate in Canada, with the House of Commons referring the issue to the Supreme Court of Canada last year, only to have it handed back to them by the judges. If the debate has just been closed in a political sense, gay rights continue to create tensions between Canadians, since support for gay weddings comes mainly from Quebec and Ontario and parts of British Columbia while the Maritimes and Prairie provinces are mostly against them.

Those tensions have also been felt in the House of Commons itself, when Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper said on Monday, anticipating that the C-38 bill would be adopted, that the vote would “lack in legitimacy” since the bill would pass because of an unnatural alliance between the federalist Liberals and the separatist Bloc Québécois. This partisan view of gay rights has been strongly condemned, especially by Bloc Québécois leader Gilles Duceppe who said that MPs from his party were democratically elected and as legitimate as any in parliament. Others called Harper a hypocrite, pouncing on the fact that he never raised any such objections allying with the Bloc in the previous month’s confidence votes. Prior to the vote, Joe Comuzzi announced his resignation from the Liberal cabinet because of his opposition to gay weddings and the fact that Liberal cabinet members were required to vote the party line in this case.

Australian art gallery raided by police; photographer faces possible indecency charge

Monday, May 26, 2008

The Rosley Oxley9 Gallery in Sydney, Australia was raided by police over the weekend following complaints of child pornography. The complaints related to an exhibition of works by photographer Bill Henson, which included several photographs of naked pubescent children. Twenty-one of the forty photographs in the exhibition were seized during the raid, and police have announced that charges will be laid under the NSW Commonwealth and Crimes Act for “publishing an indecent article”. Digital versions have also been removed from the Gallery’s website.

Whatever the artistic view of the merits of that sort of stuff – frankly I don’t think there are any – just allow kids to be kids.

Politicians on both sides of the fence spoke out against the exhibition. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, speaking to the Nine Network, said he found the photos to be “absolutely revolting […] Whatever the artistic view of the merits of that sort of stuff – frankly I don’t think there are any – just allow kids to be kids.” His Opposition counterpart, Brendan Nelson, believes that the exhibition “violates the things for which we stand as Australians and indeed as parents”.

Art experts have supported Henson and defended his work, denying claims of child pornography and exploitation. According to Betty Churcher, a former director of the National Gallery of Australia, “[t]here is absolutely no suggestion of pornography in these photographs”. Sydney art dealer Denis Savill hung one of Henson’s works, featuring two nudes, in his gallery window beside an Arthur Boyd nude, to “give them something to grizzle about”.

According to Tony Oxley, husband of gallery owner Roslyn, the gallery’s answering machine has recorded several threats to burn the building down. The police action also calls into question the fate of similar works by Henson in other galleries in Australia and around the world.

What Happens At A Bridal Trunk Show?}

Submitted by: Bridget Mora

For those who are new to the world of weddings, a lot of the terms can be unfamiliar. One often hears of bridal trunk shows, but a lot of brides are not actually so clear on what that means. Will the designer be there? Are the dresses on sale? What does a trunk have to do with it? These are all the answers you need about what goes on at a bridal trunk show.

First things first: there is no trunk. The phrase trunk show actually refers to a traveling collection of wedding gown samples from a specific designer. Once upon a time, they may have traveled by trunk, but these days the gowns come stuffed into giant boxes delivered via Fedex or UPS. By the time that brides arrive to see the wedding gowns, they are hanging up, just like all of the other sample gowns. It is important to realize that the bridal gowns one sees at a trunk show are samples to try on and order from, not dresses which are available to purchase on the spot (which is one thing that may set a bridal trunk show apart from other trunk shows).

Brides get really excited about the idea of meeting their favorite designers, and often wonder if they will be present at the trunk show. The answer is, not usually. At certain big city salons, it would not be unheard of for the designer of the gown collection to be present, but this is not generally the case. The trunk show travels to a different bridal salon around the country every weekend, so the designer could not realistically be there for every event. Typically, a representative from the gown company will be at the show. The nice thing is that the rep will be very familiar with all of the dresses and should also know what kind of changes can be made to customize a gown.

So why attend a bridal trunk show? Actually, there are a number of good reasons to go to one. The gowns in the traveling collection will be the latest samples from the designer’s most recent collection, many of which may not be available to see anywhere else. Selection is another reason; no salon can stock all of the samples from an entire line, so a trunk show will give you the chance to see a lot of your favorite designer’s wedding dresses all in one place. The rep may also throw in special extras for brides who order during a trunk show, such as free pattern changes or a designer’s sketch of the dress.

Which brings us to the next question: is a trunk show a sale? Not exactly, however there are often special incentives to those who order during a trunk show. Sometimes there is a small discount on a gown ordered during the sale (usually 10%), there may be discounts on coordinating accessories like veils, or the rep may be willing to throw in things like train extensions or rush deliveries gratis. Any special offers are available only on the weekend of the event, so come prepared to buy that weekend if you find your dream gown. Clever shoppers will try to schedule an appointment for the first day of the sale, so that if they need a day to think about it, they can make an appointment to re-visit a favorite gown later that weekend.

Since the trunk show gowns will only be in the salon for a couple of days, it is critical to come prepared to make a selection. If you have a special pair of pearl chandelier earrings you intend to wear, bring them to the appointment so you can find a gown with pearl beading which complements your chandelier earrings. If you absolutely cannot make a decision without your mom present, get her there whatever it takes. Do your research so you know what styles interest you before you start trying on gowns. And bring your checkbook, because once the trunk show leaves town, you may not get a second chance to see those particular gowns again.

Free Tenders – Know The Basics To Combat A Huge Business Proposal

by

Emilly

Now, once you have decided to bid on free tenders, it is essential for you to know what exactly tenders pertain to.

Free tenders are one of those open to almost everyone. These are advertised in the local newspapers, online bulletins, or business forums. One can track them down from the websites that are solely devoted to tender proposals as well.

As you already know, a tender is a business proposal to get the business initiated. You devise a business proposal to get the response from the potential suppliers to meet their future requirements. In a business jargon, it is entirely a procurement process where in every aspect of the business is legally bound. One has to abide by all the business laws while accepting or forwarding a tender proposal.

Moreover, a company is being chosen for the contract on the basis that its response is accurate and is completely profitable in the interest of the organization.

Format of the free tenders varies from company to company however the basic concept and the requirement of the tenders remains the same. Free Tenders can be from both the private and government sector. All the tenders have a due date and time, which are clearly mentioned in the RFP (Request For Proposal). Thus, the most important part of any tender is the deadlines, which are clearly mentioned in the proposals. Any responses which are received after the due date are not accepted in the review process.

You may easily find various websites online that cater to the updated and latest procurement and free tenders notifications to the general public. Three main basics that need to be considered essentially for free tenders proposals:

*Overview of the Company: It is the first section where description of company responding to the proposal is provided. The firm should include the history of its existence in the same field, for which the proposal is. Also, it should lay emphasis on all the projects of similar size or larger, which it has completed successfully.

*Response Section: it highlights the main reasons that how the company can achieve the requirements effectively. This section should compare the structure of the proposal with its ability to perform for that particular task, to make it easier for the clients.

*Pricing: it is a separate section of the tender proposal. If there are more than one pricing options given, then the response should mention the initial value, along with the pricing for the other alternatives. Annual Maintenance and licensing charges should be included in this section, with the exact values.

The number of people and organizations filing for the free tenders are comparatively larger and so is the extent of competition. This implies that you need to be very much accurate with your figures and proposals. A good presentation is what will reap you great bargains. This will help the client to understand the companys profile and assess its potential to complete the project in proposed duration and amount.

Somali pirates hijack Indonesian tugboat and Turkish container ship

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

Two more vessels have been hijacked in Somalia. Pirates have captured an Indonesian tugboat with a barge that was working for French oil firm Total and a Turkish container ship.

The Turkish vessel’s seizure was confirmed by a US Fifth Fleet spokesman. MV Bosphorus Prodigy is a 330 ft (100 m) container vessel flagged in Antigua and Barbuda. It is owned and operated by Isko Marine Company based in Istanbul.

The Fifth Fleet could not confirm the tugboat’s seizure, but an anonymous official with Total in Yemen could. He explained the boat and barge were headed to Malaysia from the Yemeni port of Mukalla. He said the crew consisted of both Indonesians and other nationalities, and that the vessels, which had been hired by a subcontractor, were not carrying any oil at the time.

The new hijackings came as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime asked for greater policing in the area by international bodies, and for the signing of agreements that allowed the arresting officer to take pirates back to the officer’s country for prosecution.

“Pirates cannot be keelhauled or forced to walk the plank, nor should they be dumped off the Somali coast,” said the office’s head Antonio Maria Costa. “They need to be brought to justice”.

Pitt and Jolie’s guard pulls gun on photographer in Pune, India

Friday, October 13, 2006

A private security guard attached to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie pulled out his revolver to threaten a lensman in Pune, India. The Associated Press photographer was also roughed up by the guard, Sunil Singh, who works for Tops Securities. Defamer.com, a tabloid in Los Angeles, however, says that two guards were involved in the attack. The incident occurred at the Sindh Society area in the suburb of Aundh.

A spokesperson for Tops confirmed the incident, although he claimed the weapon had been pulled out in “self-defence”. The accosted person himself chose to remain anonymous and refused to comment on the issue. Freelance photographer Rishikesh Puranik, who witnessed the scene, said that the AP lensman had approached Angelina Jolie with a request for a photo-shoot while she was on the sets. Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt are in India to shoot for A Mighty Heart, a film based on Daniel Pearl, a journalist who was killed in 2002 while in Karachi, Pakistan.
