Fiery collision between prison van and truck kills seven in Alabama, US

Saturday, October 4, 2008

Six applicants to join the Alabama Department of Corrections and their driver have been killed after the prison van they were traveling in collided with an 18-wheeled truck. Both vehicles burned at the scene.

Andrew David Carter, who was driving the Lewis Trucking Company truck with a cargo of treated lumber, escaped the wreck without serious injury. He was briefly hospitalised and released. The deceased have been identified as driver Rodney Kelley, and applicants Julius Erving Douier, Lionel Michael Moore, John Henry Foye Jr., Brandon Jamaal Anglin, Henry Louis Simmons, and Derrick Lamar Ivey. The oldest victim was 45 and the youngest nearly 19.

The wreck occurred on Alabama’s Route 82 near Bullock County, having left Bullock Correctional Facility to travel to Draper Correctional Facility in Elmore County for mental and physical fitness tests on the passengers before employment with the state.

The road was closed for eight hours while bodies and wreckage were recovered. As well as the van and the truck cab, part of the trucks cargo and several hundred square feet of nearby timber land were consumed by the fire. An investigation is ongoing, but it appears that the truck crossed the center line and there are no skid marks present.

The relatives of the victims will be offered counseling by the Department of Corrections.

England do enough against Ecuador; through to quarter-final

Sunday, June 25, 2006

A David Beckham free kick was the difference as England went through to the quarter-finals of the 2006 Fifa World Cup after a 1-0 win over Ecuador, Sunday.

For the neutral football fan the game was not especially attractive to look at. There were only 7 shots on target in the 90 minutes and neither team controlled the play well. The scrappy match was broken by up 37 fouls.

The game had temperatures at around 90 degrees Fahrenheit, which caused several English players, including Beckham, to suffer from heat exhaustion and dehydration. Beckham was sick on the pitch shortly after his goal and was substituted before the end. [1]

Ecuador had the best of the first 45 minutes. The slow tempo of the game seemed to lead to simple errors of concentration from England and favoured Ecuador’s passing play.

Ecuador had slightly more ball possession over the game and also the first chance. John Terry‘s back header to his keeper fell short but Ashley Cole slid in to deflect Carlos Tenorio‘s shot onto Paul Robinson‘s crossbar.

In the second half England put more pressure on Ecuador’s goal. However, passes into lone striker Wayne Rooney – who played 90 minutes for the first time since he recovered from injury – were often off-target.

England’s best chance to score from free play followed Wayne Rooney trickery on the left touchline. The striker evaded his marker but Frank Lampard spooned Rooney’s cut back high over the bar.

Beckham’s free kick was a trademark fast curled pass from over 30 yards which beat the opposition wall and took a small touch off the fingertips of Cristian Mora before nestling into the bottom right corner of the net. The goal meant David Beckham had broken an English record by scoring in the 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cups, the first English player ever to score in three different World Cups.

England were scheduled to meet the winner of game 52, Portugal, in the quarter-final of the World Cup in Gelsenkirchen on July 1.

Fans mourn death and celebrate life of Michael Jackson around the world

Friday, June 26, 2009

Fans have spontaneously gathered in many places around the world to both mourn and celebrate Michael Jackson who died yesterday.

In New York, a crowd of 200 people gathered, to dance and sing, under the marquee of the Apollo Theater on 125th Street in Harlem, where the Jackson Five famously performed at Amateur Night, which read “In Memory of Michael Jackson, A True Apollo Legend, 1958–2009”.

In Los Angeles, California, hundreds of fans gathered outside of the UCLA Medical Center where Jackson had been taken by paramedics.

At the Hollywood Walk of Fame, fans gathered at the star for radio commentator Michael Jackson. Jackson’s own star, located at 6927 Hollywood Boulevard, was inaccessible because of the premiere of Brüno taking place at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.

Fans at the 2009 Glastonbury Festival exchanged the news via text message. Ironically, false rumours of such celebrity events have been common at the Festival in past years, as attendees have little access to news services. As a consequence many fans have not believed the news, and will not believe it until it is announced from on stage or printed in one of the Festival’s own daily newspapers later today, as Jackson’s death occurred at 22:26 last night local time. Some people, however, have been playing Jackson’s music backstage, and an impromptu tribute to Jackson was held at the Festival’s “Stone Circle”. The Festival officially begins today, and it is expected that several performers will pay tribute to Jackson.

In Toronto, fans gathered outside of the studio of MuchMusic, which adjoins the street, to watch as a special commemorative programme was broadcast live from the studio.

Politically concerned movie Zootopia wins Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film

Wednesday, March 1, 2017

On Sunday, Disney’s Zootopia won the Oscars award for the Best Animated Feature Film at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony held at Los Angeles. Pixar’s animated short Piper won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film and Disney’s The Jungle Book won for Visual Effects.

Others competing with Zootopia in the category were Kubo and the Two Strings, My Life as a Zucchini, The Red Turtle, and Disney’s Moana. This was the first Oscar for directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore who were previously nominated for, respectively, Bolt and Wreck-It Ralph.

In the acceptance speech, director Byron Howard said, “About five years ago, almost six now, […] we got this crazy idea of talking about humanity with talking animals in the hopes that, when the film came out, it would make the world just a slightly better place.” The Disney movie addresses several social problems such as racism, sexism, prejudice, stereotyping, and fear. The New York Times said the parental guidance (PG) rated movie was “Funny, smart, thought-provoking — and musical, too.”

Before announcing the award, Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal said, “As a Mexican, as a Latin-American, as a migrant worker, as a human being, I’m against any form of wall that wants to separate us.” The movie was released in March, during the 2016 US presidential race.

In an interview with Variety, the directors of Zootopia said movies about bias and discrimination haven’t been Disney’s main focus, but during its production, “Things were not great in the world. […] It was more like we had our finger on something important right now and we really need to do our best to portray this as honestly as we can. Then with the election and the campaign, the real move towards governing by fear […] I don’t think we could have predicted it any closer with this film.”

With this win, the Walt Disney Company has won nine out of ten Best Animated Feature Film Oscars in the last decade, with Pixar Animation Studio winning six out of them. Zootopia also won Best Animated Film at the Annie Awards and the Golden Globe Awards.

The Modern Fan For The Modern Home: Contemporary Ceiling Fans}

Submitted by: David Faulkner

Arguably since the 1950s, the ceiling fan has been a staple of every home, even though the likes of the air conditioning system have replaced it in recent years for no apparent reason other than technological innovation and novelty value. However, the contemporary ceiling fan is making a bit of a comeback at the moment. It has been modified and brought up to date with manufacturers that are making the most of the environmental concern of society at the moment.

Contemporary ceiling fans are more sophisticated than ever before. They have been updated to fit in with modern dcor so that they appeal to homeowners today and will continue to do so well into the future. Some have a sleek and stylish look that is both pleasing to the eye and able to fit in with a whole range of dcor themes, including the minimalist style that is so difficult to buy for. Most contemporary ceiling fans also have lights incorporated so that they kill two birds with one stone. You do not have to find room for a light as well as a fan and that ultimately looks better than overcrowding your ceiling too.

Contemporary ceiling fans come in a variety of colours so that you can choose the one that reflects you best. Traditional ones only tended to come in one or two colours and you had to make do with that but now you can choose pillar box red if you so wish! It truly is a consumer market!

Contemporary ceiling fans also fit into the modern home because of the sheer convenience of use! They fit in well with other home appliances because of the remote that comes with them! You can actually sit in a chair watching TV and switch your ceiling fan on or off, or even change the temperature settings. You have no need to move any muscle except for the one in your finger! Traditional fans had a switch on the wall or a pull mechanism, but it was difficult to alter the speed or temperature settings. The remote therefore gives better accessibility and functionality for everyday use. The only thing that you should be concerned about is getting that remote confused with the one for the TV or DVD player! The convenience is truly amazing and is just what consumers want in a hectic and stressful world!

The contemporary ceiling fan is undoubtedly one of the most popular features of any house at the moment. They are readily available for householders to buy and are so easy to work that there is no excuse not to have one installed. It can really add character to your home as well as comfort that very few other features can afford you.

Wikinews Shorts: December 20, 2008

A compilation of brief news reports for Saturday, December 20, 2008.

The United States government has announced that it will give US$17.4 billion in loans to help three of the nation’s automobile makers – Chrysler, General Motors, and Ford – avoid bankruptcy.

The money will be taken from the $700 billion bailout package originally intended to rescue US banks. General Motors will get $9.4 billion and Chrysler $4 billion before next year. Ford stated that it wants to get by without government aid.

President George Bush said that it would not be “a responsible course of action” to allow the companies to collapse.

20 percent of Victorians drive on worn tyres

Wednesday, June 7, 2006

A survey released today by the RACV and Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce found that 20 percent of cars in Victoria have at least one worn or unroadworthy tyre.

The study looked at 1,000 cars last month and found of those 200 had at least one tyre that had worn.

Chief engineer for the RACV, Michael Case said that driving on worn tyres could increase the distance it takes a car to brake and road safety. “Increasing the braking distance can increase the chance of running into the car in front of you and having an unnecessary collision and if that collision is serious enough certainly it can cause injuries” said Mr Case.

It is widely accepted that tyres are one of the most important parts of a vehicle. As tyres are the only part of a vehicle in contact with the road, they affect acceleration, braking and cornering.

As well as the safety issues associated with driving a vehicle with a worn tyre, drivers can be fined for “driving an unsafe vehicle” and fined AUD$171, in addition police may “defect” the vehicle, restricting its use until repaired. Victorian law requires that tyres have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm.

Wikinews investigated the average price of each tyre on a typical large and small Australian sedan, and SUV and found the cost to be AUD$129, AUD$105, and AUD$191 respectively.

Honda Civic tops Canada’s list of most stolen cars

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

The 1999 and 2000 year model Honda Civic SiR tops the list of Canada’s most stolen cars.

Consumer popularity also assures the cars will be popular with thieves. Its the second year in a row the Honda SiR has topped the list.

Rick Dubin Vice President of Investigations for the Insurance Bureau of Canada said “The Civics are easy targets.”

Dubin said that once stolen, the cars are most often sold to “chop shops” where thieves completely dismantle the vehicles. The automobile’s individual parts are worth more than the entire car.

The sheer numbers of the cars and their lack of theft deterrent systems make them thieves’ preferred choices.

1999 and 2000 Honda Civics do not come with an electronic immobilizer, however all Hondas from 2001 and onward are equipped with an immobilizer. Immobilizers will be mandatory on all new cars sold beginning September 2007. The devices enable an engine computer to recognize an electronic code in the key. If the code in the key and the engine don’t match exactly, the vehicle can’t be started.

In third place was the 2004 Subaru Impreza, while the 1999 Acura Integra came in fourth, with the 1994 Honda Civic rounding out the top five.

In sixth place, the 1998 Acura Integra, and the 1993 Dodge Shadow completed seventh.

When asked why early model vehicles are selected, he said that, “auto thieves continue to find it easier to steal older vehicles lacking an IBC-approved immobilizer. We’ve seen this trend developing for several years, and these results confirm it.”

Another Honda automobile, the 1996 year model Civic filled eighth place, with the 2000 German Audi TT Quattro in ninth.

The American 1996 Chevrolet/GMC Blazer rounded out the top ten.

None of the above cars had an electronic immobilizer.

Hemp And Bamboo Faster Than A Cheetah}

Submitted by: Nigel Plant

Did you know Bamboo and Hemp are the most productive and fastest growing plants on the planet?

The bamboo tree (or grass) is grown in abundance in many parts of the world and is perfect for sustainable construction. Technically a grass, bamboo wood is used to make furniture, flooring and many types of kitchen and office accessories including ipad stand, phone holder, tea sachet gift box, desk organiser and wooden chopping board, which all make unique gifts that show you care about the environment.

Among bamboos great qualities is that its naturally anti-bacterial and it is also water resistant, which makes it a better choice than other hard woods that can stain or deteriorate when any kind of moisture gets in contact. It is also an extremely durable piece of material that is easy to move and has a natural golden colour. Bamboo furniture makes an attractive addition to your home or office, as well as helping our precious planet and animals. Bamboos are habitats for a number of endangered species, including the Giant Panda, so increasing bamboo growth helps them too.

Bamboo, being one of the world’s most prolific plants, is able to reach maturity in about four years, compared to the typical 25 to 70 years for commercial tree species. Though most people are generally familiar with this beautiful and graceful plant, the average person is usually astounded when learning that there are more than 1000 documented uses of bamboo. Bamboo is actually a tropical grass, with an extensive root system that sends out an average of four to six new shoots per year, naturally replenishing itself and growing to heights of 50 feet or more. Some bamboo species grow up to 4 feet per day and can be harvested every 3 to 4 years. As a result, bamboo is one of nature’s most sustainable resources since it is naturally regenerative. Bamboo is a plentiful, renewable natural product with many remarkable characteristics. It is natural and chemical-free and is grown without using pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Bamboo fibre is 100% biodegradable.

Another excellent natural plant is Hemp, often considered an environmental super fibre. Hemp fabric is made from the fibres in the herbaceous plant of the species Cannabis Sativa. Its a high-yield crop that produces significantly more fibre per acre than either cotton or flax. Hemp makes a durable material and is excellent for bags, backpacks, laptop cases and shoulder bags and when mixed with organic cotton has a lovely soft, flexible texture. All products manufactured from Hemp are environmentally friendly, sustainable and psychoactive free. They make an ideal unique gift too, that shows you care about our planet.

The plant that produces this eco friendly fabric is a distinct variety of the Cannabis plant. Due to the similar leaf shape, Hemp is frequently confused with marijuana, although both plants are Cannabis hemp contains virtually no THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), the active ingredient in marijuana.

Hemp farmers do not need to use herbicides or pesticides. Hemp suppresses weeds and improves the soil for crop rotation and is therefore well suited for use in organic and sustainable farming. The mass introduction of chemical fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides has helped to keep the price of cotton and other fibre and oilseed crops low. However, as pests have become more resistant to these chemicals, larger quantities are required poisoning both land and water supply. It is planted so tightly together that no light is left for weed growth and pests are not attracted. A large percentage of the nutrients that hemp uses for growth are returned to the soil as the leaves fall so the need for fertilisers is reduced. It also fits well into an organic crop rotation where soil fertility must be maintained.

Hemp’s main competitors are cotton (paper and textiles), flax (fibre and oil), and evening primrose (health). All of these are grown using large amounts of pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals. Hemp also provides a sustainable alternative to many oil-based products. These can be extremely damaging to the environment both in terms of waste from refining oil, spillage during transport and disposal of the end products, which are often not biodegradable. Plastic, nylon, polyester, PVC, cellophane, fibreglass resins and many other common every day products are usually petroleum-based but hemp is now being used to make plastics.

Nature itself is giving us the answers to help our planet; we just need to make the most of our natural, renewable resources.

Hemp and Bamboo- we love you!!
