In Sydney, Australia, Thomas and Manju Sam were jailed after being convicted of manslaughter on Monday. The court found they had failed to take their ill daughter to medical appointments, and shunned the effective conventional medical treatments offered. Instead they chose homeopathic ‘alternative’ medical treatments which the medical profession generally considers to be pseudoscience. As a result, their then nine-month-old malnourished daughter Gloria died of the skin disorder eczema in 2002.
In the evidence, the Crown prosecutor, Mr Tedeschi, said that the Sams ignored repeated advice to send Gloria to a skin specialist for her eczema. The severity of her condition made her skin so thin that it was constantly breaking and becoming infected. Creams provided by medical doctors were not used; they preferred to employ homeopathic drops as a method to treat her illness. By the time they finally sought treatment, “her skin was weeping, her body malnourished and her corneas melting”, and she died from the complications and massive infection caused by the effectively untreated eczema.

In his ruling, Supreme Court Justice of New South Wales Peter Johnson stated that “Gloria suffered helplessly and unnecessarily … from a condition that was treatable.”
Thomas received a maximum sentence of eight years and is no longer allowed to practice homeopathy. Manju received a maximum sentence of five years and four months.
Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine which uses substances that have gone through a process of serial dilution so extensive that in most cases, no molecules of the original are likely to remain. There is no convincing evidence that it has any effect greater than placebo. For it to work as homeopaths claim, basic well-tested scientific laws would have to be wrong.

Thomas Sam, 42, and his wife Manju Sam, 36, from Sydney, Australia, are undergoing trial for manslaughter by gross negligence for the death of their nine-month-old child, Gloria. She died from infection caused by severe eczema after they shunned effective conventional medical treatments for homeopathy, a form of alternative medicine that has been described as pseudoscience. Articles in peer-reviewed academic journals including Social Science & Medicine have characterized homeopathy as a form of quackery.
Gloria developed severe eczema at the age of four months and the parents were advised to send the child to a skin specialist. Thomas Sam, a practising homeopath, instead decided to treat his daughter himself. His daughter’s condition deteriorated, to the point that the baby spent all her energy battling the infections caused by the constant breaking of the skin, leading to severe malnutrition and, eventually, her death. By the end, Gloria’s eczema was so severe that her skin broke every time her parents changed her clothes or nappy, and in the words of the Crown prosecutor, Mark Tedeschi, QC, “Gloria spent a lot of the last five months of her life crying, irritable, scratching and the only thing that gave her solace was to suck on her mother’s breast.” Gloria also became unable to move her legs.
Mr. Tedeschi also told the court that, over the last five months of her life, “Gloria’s eczema played a devastating role in her overall health and it is asserted by the Crown that both her parents knew this and discussed it with each other.” However, despite their child’s severe illness, and her lack of improvement, the Sams continued to shun conventional medical treatment, instead seeking help from other homeopaths and naturopaths. Gloria temporarily improved during the rare times they used conventional treatments, but they soon dropped them in favour of homeopathy, and she consistently worsened.
Allegedly, Thomas’ sister pleaded with him to send Gloria to a conventional medical doctor, but he replied “I am not able to do that”. The parents are also accused of putting their social life ahead of their child, taking her on a trip to India and leaving her to servants while embarking on a busy social schedule, and giving her homeopathic drops instead of using the prescription creams they had been given.
Gloria was finally taken to the emergency department shortly before her death. By this time, “her skin was weeping, her body malnourished and her corneas melting”, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
Speaking in the parents’ defense, Tom Molomby, SC, said that, as the parents came from India, where homeopathy is in common use, they should be declared not guilty due to cultural differences.
Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine which treats patients with massively diluted forms of substances that, if given to a healthy person undiluted, would cause symptoms similar to the disease. Typical treatments take the dilutions, with ritualised shaking between each step of the dilution, past the level where any molecules of the original substance are likely to remain; for homeopathic treatments to work, basic well-understood concepts in chemistry and physics would have to be wrong. There is no evidence that homeopathy is more effective than placebo for any condition.

Your eyes are the most expressive feature on your face, which also means that the brow area has the potential to age quickly beyond your years. Although you may feel energetic on the inside, fine lines and deep wrinkles can make your face appear tired and weary.
There are many facial rejuvenation procedures available, but brow lifts and Botox are two cosmetic procedures that combat the effects of ageing, restoring your former youthful looks.
A brow lift also referred to as a forehead lift, can revive a tired face. Brow lifts take care of a number of common age-related complaints. Not only can it perk up your eyes by tightening any hooding on the lid, but it lifts the eyebrows, creating a youthful arch.
Forehead lifts also smooth out deep furrows in the forehead and the pinched lines that can develop between the eyes. The benefit to choosing a brow lift is that the procedure addresses a variety of problems that occur in the same facial region.
During the procedure, incisions will be made along the hairline so that any scarring can be easily camouflaged. If eyelids need to be corrected, additional incisions will be made within the crease. The skin on the forehead is pulled smooth and tight while the excess is cut away. A technique gaining popularity is the use of an endoscopy, which is a small camera that is inserted into the skin, allowing the surgeon to operate using smaller incisions.
Recovery from a forehead lift varies by individual, but you should expect to be out of work for two weeks and have some tightness for up to a month afterwards. Risks include nerve damage, temporary or permanent numbness, and hair follicle damage.
The results will be noticeable immediately after surgery and can last many years. Another benefit of this procedure is that it slows down the ageing process of the brow area, so you’ll look younger for longer.
For those looking for a less intense and invasive method of facial rejuvenation, Botox can correct similar age-related problems for a fraction of the cost. Botox is an injectable that temporarily paralyzes facial muscles. Once the muscle is paralyzed, the face no longer creates the unwanted wrinkle or line, making the face look younger and refreshed.
Botox can be used on several areas of the face including the forehead wrinkles, fine lines near the eyes and nasiolabial folds. The results are temporary, lasting up to six months. Botox involves no anesthesia, which makes it much safer than traditional plastic surgery procedures, but there are still some risks involved, including bleeding, excessive bruising, and eyelid droop from over-injection.
Fortunately, since the effects of Botox are temporary, even over-injection will eventually resolve itself. The recovery period is short. One can expect to return to work the following day with minor if any redness or bruising. There is usually little pain involved.
A board-certified plastic surgeon can help you decide on which facial rejuvenation technique, whether Botox or a brow lift, will provide you with the optimal results for your individual situation.

A house in Eglinton, a village suburb of Bathurst in Central-Western New South Wales has been significantly damaged after being hit by a truck just before 3 p.m. today. It is not known if anyone was inside the house at the time the accident occurred. Police said no major injuries were sustained as a result of the accident.
The accident occurred in light rain and the road surface was moderately wet.
It is believed that the truck was traveling along Eleven Mile Drive, Eglinton when a Subaru Forester pulled into its path from a side street. The Subaru had been required to give way to the truck. The truck struck the Subaru, hitting it and pushing it down the road before losing control and hitting a house on the opposite side of the road.
The driver of the truck was trapped inside his vehicle for around 15 minutes before being released by rescue personnel, the driver of the Subaru was taken by ambulance to the Bathurst Base Hospital to ensure they were not suffering any major injuries.
When the truck hit the house, a gas line was ruptured creating a hazard for rescue crews. The pipeline’s operator – Agility disconnected the line after the truck driver was rescued. Police also requested that electricity to the house be disconnected.
It was not until 4:15 p.m. that approval was given for the truck to be pulled from the house. It is expected that engineers from Bathurst Regional Council will inspect the house to determine if it is still structurally safe.
While it is not unusual in Bathurst for trucks to hit homes, it is unusual for such an accident to occur at this location. Most accidents of this nature occur on the Great Western Highway, which intersects the city and is a freight gateway to the region.

Australian airline Qantas has returned the first of its fleet of Airbus A380s to service, after all six of the “superjumbo” aircraft were grounded three weeks ago following one aircraft’s engine sustaining extensive midair damage; it landed safely in Singapore without injury. The airline stated that all of the aircraft have undergone extensive safety inspections and they are satisfied they are safe.
| [It was] certainly the most serious incident that the A380 has experienced since it entered operations. | ||
Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas, said: “It’s great that we can reintroduce the aircraft. We are 100 percent comfortable with it. If we weren’t, we wouldn’t be restarting the operations today.” A spokesperson confirmed that tests had been performed “in close consultation with Rolls-Royce and Airbus” on the model’s Trent 900 engines. Qantas has replaced at least 14 engines, and modifications have been made to Trent 900s used by two other companies, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines.
Experts said that the incident was embarrassing for Airbus; the airline’s shares have dropped by 7% since. Aviation journalist Tom Ballantyne said that the failure earlier this month was “certainly the most serious incident that the A380 has experienced since it entered operations.” The A380 made its first commercial flight in 2007, and is now in service with several other airlines, including Air France. It is the largest commercial passenger airliner in the world, with an 840-passenger maximum capacity, though Qantas’s can carry 450. There are reportedly plans to build a cargo version of the plane, which, aviation experts have suggested, would be the world’s first “triple-decker” freight aircraft; Airbus has not confirmed that this variant will be built.

Keeping Up With The Latest Fashion Trends
by
Rex Schmidt
Fashion knowledge can influence many aspects of your life. The clothes we wear might not completely make the person, but they do appear to make that person look a heck of a lot better. This article has fashion tips that anybody can use every day.
Always keep your eye out for any changes in the latest styles. Styles are constantly changing, which is why you are going to want to make sure that you are always up to date with the latest there is to know. Magazines get looks directly from the runway, so they are often the first to publish new trends.
Sheer clothes might make you sexy. However, you need to be careful about the level of sheerness and the area of the sheer. Something too sheer can cause you to look trashy.
Moisturizers in your shampoo and conditioner are essential if you hair has a tendency to frizz in damp weather. This will protect your hair by refusing to lock in excessive moisture. Avoid products which create volume; this includes products containing wheat or rice.
Before throwing away your beauty products, get out every little bit. For tubed products, use a toothpaste tube squeezer to get every last drop. Sometimes turning a bottle on it’s cap or sideways can help you squeeze out that last drop. You may also remove the tops once a product reaches the remnants. You can save tons of money this way.
If you carry a few extra pounds, then avoid wearing clothes with horizontal stripes. This pattern can place extra emphasis on your body’s width, as it draws the eye across your body. If you love stripes, try a vertical pattern instead. This elongates your frame, drawing the eye up and down.
Common wisdom is to avoid horizontal stripes if you happen to be on the heavy side. These stripes put greater emphasis on your width, which will cause you to appear even wider than you really are. Patterns must run from head to toe to make you look taller and more slender.
A newsletter is a good way to stay on top of trends. When you do that, you’ll be ready for every season and you will be first in your social group to have the latest fashions.
To improve the look of your lips, use a pencil and then blend the perimeter with a sponge. Use petroleum jelly or gloss on top of this. Finish off by emphasizing your upper lip with extra gloss towards the center to achieve a pouty look. Another way is to use an shade of eye shadow that can highlight your lip color. Put just a dab of eye shadow in the middle of both your upper and lower lips.
When you look and feel great, people notice. When your reflection is impressive, people you know and strangers will notice you. When you want people to give you that approving nod, try to look great. What you’ve read here should set you on the path to fashion fabulousness.

Pichilemu, Chile – Last Saturday, Chile was hit by a 8.8 earthquake. Many coastal towns were also hit by a tsunami, and Pichilemu was one of them. Its inhabitants were surprised by the giant waves that destroyed the most of the costanera and that reached the city square.
Pichilemu, that means in Mapudungun language small forest, is one of the most famous Chilean resort towns in the central zone of Chile. It is recurrently visited by surfers from all the world, because the Punta de Lobos beach is considered one of the best for surf practice worldwide.
Central Pichilemu was not severely damaged by the earthquake, but the tsunami caused significant destruction. The Fishermen Creek, located in front of the beach, was completely destroyed, and its machines are now unusable. Most of the Agustín Ross architecture that characterized the city, three of them being National Monuments of Chile, were damaged. The Agustín Ross Mirador, a famous location in front of the beach, located less than 200 meters from the Fisherman Creek, was completely destroyed. Its famous balustrades were washed away or thrown asunder. Many restaurants, kiosks and a circus were affected by the tsunami.
The rural parts of Pichilemu, like Ciruelos, Rodeillo and Espinillo feature houses constructed from adobe. Many were more than 100-years old, and were destroyed or are now uninhabitable.
The most powerful aftershock was produced almost 40 kilometers in front of the coast of Pichilemu, at the 03:10 local time (07:10 UTC) in March 2, with an intensity of 5.5 in the Richter scale, according to the USGS.
The Intendant of the O’Higgins Region, Juan Núñez, had a meeting with the Governor of the Cardenal Caro Province, Loreto Puebla, the Mayor of Pichilemu, Roberto Córdova, and naval and military authorities, juntas de vecinos representatives. They decided to leave the Carabineros police force to maintain the security of the city.
